What Is Heat Transfer?

The heat transfer concept became popular with the iron-on decals of the 1960’s. But over the last couple of decades, the stiff,

plastic decals that cracked and faded with washing have evolved into a high-quality transfer that is comfortable to wear and does

not fade or crack when washed. Today, anyone who has access to a color printer can create images on t-shirts, sweatshirts, tote

bags, ribbons, cloth wall calendars, purses, mousepads, keyboard wrist pads, coasters, dish towels, robes, team jerseys, work

shirts, aprons, suspenders, shorts, fabric books, pillows, and more!

The heat transfer process consists of an image printed onto specially coated paper. The three most popular transfer papers avail-

able are color laser copier (CLC), thermal printers, and ink jet printers. Keep in mind, you must have the correct paper for your

type of printer. This printed "heat transfer" and fabric item are then placed into a heat press at 375º. When complete, the paper

is peeled away to reveal the image.

integrate an existing system to increase functionality. Complete transfer systems include printers, scanners, digital cameras, com-

puters, software, and heat presses. While many have made a profession of this short–run solution to screen printing, others use

transfer for in-house marketing, corporate functions, personalized awards and recognition items, and customized gifts.

What Is Ink Jet Sublimation?

The ink jet sublimation process uses sublimation ink, installed in a printer equipped with Piezo print heads, to print computer graph-

ics onto high-quality ink jet paper. This “sublimation transfer” and a specially coated item (substrate) are then placed into a heat

press. At 350-400º, the solid molecules in the ink turn into a gas and penetrate the pores of the substrate’s coating. When the

substrate is removed from the heat press, the temperature drops, the pores close and the gas reverts back to a solid state. The

result is an incredibly vibrant sub-surface transfer that will not scratch off or wash out.
