Creating a Desktop Printer
A desktop printer is a selectable icon that is used to identify the
type and location of an available printer. Depending on the
circumstances, either the PS Desktop Printer Utility (that is in the
FastRIP folder on your hard disk) or the Chooser will be used to
create a desktop printer. It is highly recommended you create a
Desktop Printer for FastRIP
TM
.
Sending a Print Job
Sending a print job refers to how a print job will be transmitted from a graphics
application to FastRIP
TM
. For example, if a single computer is being used, the print job
would be sent directly to FastRIP
TM
. If a computer network is being used, then the print
job would be sent using the protocol for that network,
such as either AppleTalk or LPR. The Create Desktop list
box is used to select the method by which the print job is
sent to FastRIP
TM
.
The recommended settings when printing from a single
computer directly to the printer are:
With: FastRIP LW 8.*
Create Desktop.... FastRIP (Direct)
Selecting a PPD File
A second dialog box will open, allowing further settings to be adjusted, such as
selecting the PPD (Postscript Printer Descriptions) file. A proper PPD file is CRITICAL
to having FastRIP
TM
output properly. This file tells the RIP exactly how to print, what
calibration files to use, the size of the printing dot and several other things. To configure
FastRIP
TM
to use the proper PPD file, click the Change button in the PostScript Printer
Description (PPD) file window. PPD files are on your Macintosh HD in the System
Folder>Extensions Folder>Printer Descriptions. There will be a number of PPD files in
this folder - many of which were placed there by the MAC Operating System.
