FastRIP
TM
PRO for Macintosh ver. 9.0

Appendix A
Setting up LPD Network
Setting up LPD Networking
The advantage of LPD Networking is that a mixed TCP/IP network of Windows
TM
and
Macintosh computers may be used with FastRIP
TM
. The remote computer will initiate
the print job, which is then sent to the Host via the Line Printer Remote (LPR) protocol.
The following sections describe how LPD Networking and the LPR Protocol are
configured and applied for both Host and Remote computers.
Installing LPD Networking and the LPR Protocol
Under Mac OS
For a Host Macintosh computer, the LPD Networking checkbox must be selected during
the installation of FastRIP
TM
. This will ensure that the LPR protocols are installed on the
Host.
For a remote Macintosh computer, verify that the computer has been configured for
TCP/IP networking. Once TCP/IP is configured on the remote Macintosh, the LPR
protocol will also be available. For more information about configuring a Macintosh
computer for TCP/IP, consult the Mac OS Help facility.
Using LPR Protocol
For a remote Macintosh computer to use the LPR protocol, the PS Desktop Printer
Utility must be used to create a new desktop printer. This desktop printer will identify the
IP Address of the Host computer on the network, as well as the printer model to which
the raster data will be sent. The following steps describe how to set up such a desktop
printer:
1. Open the PS Desktop Printer Utility, and select the Printer (LPR) item.
2. When selecting the PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file, click the Change
button to display a list of available printers. Select the printer to which
FastRIP
TM
will be sending the raster output.
3. Once these settings have been entered, the desktop printer may be saved by
selecting Save in the File menu. This will create a desktop printer that is
selectable from graphics applications.
4. Start FastRIP
TM
and go to Options>Output Selection. Here you enter the IP
address of the device (Host) and the Host Queue Name to configure.
